Potatoes

September 3, 2018

Last week, I debunked the myth that coconut oil is poison and will kill you. This week, it's time to tackle the topic of potatoes. I always get surprised looks when I tell the members of my 21 Day Sugar Detox groups that yes, they can eat potatoes on the program (and as many of them as they want too!).

Potatoes, because they are high in carbohydrates, are given such a negative rap in the nutrition world. Want to lose weight? Cut out potatoes.

But what do we replace them with as a "healthy" alternative? Processed grain based products that are 1000000 times worse than just eating the stupid potato in the first place.

We reach for rice, granola bars, oats, rice cakes, low-fat crackers - anything to avoid eating the deadly potato, but in that we miss the real point. Potatoes are a real, whole food. They come from the ground and contain no other ingredients. They are just potatoes. All these other food products are concoctions of food manufacturers that our body doesn't see as food.

White potatoes are loaded with potassium, vitamin B6, copper, niacin, phosphorous, fiber, and so much more. Sweet potatoes, on the other hand, contain vitamins A and C, as well as fiber, manganese, and phosphorous, among others.

What do these processed replacements contain? Synthetic fake vitamins and minerals that your body knows better than to absorb.

Potatoes aren't the enemy. Carbs aren't the enemy. What is the enemy are these processed, refined foods trying to trick us into believing that real, whole foods found in nature that we've eaten for thousands of years are somehow NOT good for us now because we have these new fancy products that are made in a lab. It just doesn't work that way.

My bottom line: eat the potatoes, and make sure you add butter on top for extra nutrient absorption. Trust me - it's 10 times better anyway!
