Why Do We Care?

In a world where literally anything goes, why do we care so much about what other people think of us?

Think about that for a second - we live in a society that tells us (for the most part) to be ourselves and express our personalities. You be you.

However, time and time again, when we want to be ourselves and trust in who we truly are, we are confronted with the fear of judgement or actual judgement from others. What will they think of me or What are you doing??

Why is this instinct to fear judgement so ingrained in our minds? Why does the opinion of another person, especially if that person is a stranger, matter so much to us?

Honestly, if I knew the answer, I'd probably be a lot less stressed and happier at times. Regardless, it is still important to recognize our anxiety and worry around the thoughts and opinions of others. How much of your time is devoted to such thoughts as:

"I'm not as pretty/smart/confident/strong/thin/etc as _____________, so I shouldn't even try to do __________."

"If I wear this shirt, what will _________ think of how I look in it?"

"I work at ____________. I"m sure that he/she thinks that job is basically worthless."

Whatever our thoughts are, at times they consume us. We are enveloped in the fear of judgement for our actions, even the smallest of actions.

However, it doesn't have to always be that way. Taking a step back and evaluating yourself in an objective light might prove to be an enlightening practice. You aren't as horrible or off track as you might think you are.

It's time to shed the fear of judgement and embrace who you are. Life your life. Enjoy your life. Be who you are, quirks and all.

It's not easy, but it certainly makes for a better life and outlook.

xoxo Olivia
