Happy New Year!

Can you believe it is 2017? It's almost unreal how fast time flies.

With the dawn of a New Year, most of us decide to make resolutions to try and better ourselves in the New Year. But, how many years have you actually followed through with those resolutions? Don't worry - I'm right there with you! It's hard to remember and keep up with a resolution you make in January when July (heck even February!) rolls around.

However, with all of the fallen and misplaced resolutions from previous years comes a chance to make this year different. It's time to put aside 2016 and make 2017 your best year yet. And it starts with making resolutions in a new way.

Instead of making the typical resolutions that are broad (i.e. get healthier), try making resolutions that are concrete and definite. Also, add a time frame to those ideas so that you have a game plan in mind.

For instance, this year, my resolution is to complete a list of items every week, month, or two months with certain items. My plan is to make a checklist and hang it somewhere in my apartment where I'll see it every day, and cross of each item as it gets down each month, January-December 2017. My theme for the items is healing and self-care. 2016 has been a year of ups and downs for me physically and emotionally, so 2017 must include an overload of self-care items that are a priority for me, not just some "great idea" I have in January.

My list includes the following:

Monthly Items:

  • Massage

  • Church during the week (on a non-Holy Day of obligation)

  • Yoga class (hoping to get to yoga more than once a month, but I'm starting small)

  • One complete day off from work in any form

Weekly/Bi-Weekly Items:

  • Acupuncture (I'm at weekly now, hoping to taper to every other week soon, eventually once a month)

  • Foam Rolling

  • Psoas stretching (basically lying on the floor deep breathing)

Bi-Monthly Items

  • A pedicure

  • Read a fiction book not related to health or fitness or food

This isn't a complete list, but it covers most of what I hope to accomplish this year. Healing, health, and happiness is my motto for 2017! What's yours?
